The transition to a renewable energy future

Governments play a key role in accelerating the energy transition through taxation, subsidies, targeting
and bans. More than 25 years have passed since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted, yet
renewable energy is still at a disadvantage. Fossil fuels continue to receive the lion’s
the lion’s share of subsidies, tax breaks and other support. The following are key actions that governments
and other actors to level the playing field, although their implementation
may vary depending on local conditions.
