EC - 10.04.2008 Imaging Equipment version 1.1 Draft 1 released
The ENERGY STAR specification for imaging equipment are being revisited to set Tier 2 performance levels that ensure the ENERGY STAR mark continues to represent the top performers in terms of energy efficiency. Manufacturers and other stakeholders are invited to provide input.

EC - 13.02.2008 New European Energy Star Regulation published
This Regulation (EC No 106/2008) requires EU institutions and central Member State government authorities to use energy efficiency criteria no less demanding than those defined in the ENERGY STAR programme when purchasing office equipment. The usual thresholds for public supply contracts apply.

Important memorandum regarding qualification of Computer Families. With this memorandum, EPA details a concern raised to ENERGY STAR regarding qualification of families of Computers, confirms the intention of the product family portion of the Version 4.0 Computer Specification, and describes next steps for ENERGY STAR Computer Partners in verifying that families of products are being qualified with ENERGY STAR as intended.

EC - 17.07.2007 New product application form for EU ENERGY STAR registrations of Computer Equipment is now available. The European Parliament has adopted today a new version of the regulation on the ENERGY STAR programme. It requires the Member States to apply demanding energy efficiency criteria in the public procurement of office equipment. This marks the first time that the Council, the European Parliament and the Commission agree that certain energy efficiency criteria become binding in public procurement. 24.05.2007 Energy Calculators updated
Modifications include updated power consumptions and prices to reflect current models on the market. Currency rates for Danish, Norwegian and Swedish calculations have been adjusted.

EC - 20.12.2006 The EU and the USA have signed a new Agreement to continue the ENERGY STAR programme for office equipment for another five years.
The Agreement features innovative and demanding energy efficiency criteria for computers, copiers, printers and computer monitors, and is expected to yield 30 TWh electricity savings – the approximate equivalent of the electricity demand in Hungary - in the EU over the next three years. ENERGY STAR is part of the Commission’s strategy to better manage energy demand, contribute to the security of energy supply and mitigate climate change. 17.12.2006 The EU ENERGY STAR website has been expanded with the Norwegian language
The Norges Vassdrags- og Energidirektorat (www.nve.no Link opens new window) will use the Norwegian section for their upcoming www.energystar.no website and ENERGY STAR campaign. The translation into Norwegian has been initiated and funded by the Norges Vassdrags- og Energidirektorat.

EC - 13.09.2006 Update on development of tier 2 computer specification available
As indicated in previous draft specifications, EPA and the European Commission intend to include two tiers in the revised ENERGY STAR specification for computers (Version 4.0). While the Tier 1 requirements are close to being finalized, work on the Tier 2 requirements continues. In order to keep stakeholders aware of the steps underway to draft the Tier 2 specification, EPA is distributing the attached Update Document. This document includes information on the development of an energy and performance assessment approach that EPA hopes to apply to all products covered by the Tier 2 specification. EC - 24.05.2006 ECESB meeting on 24 May 2006
The Commission staff presented the status of the renewal of the ENERGY STAR Agreement and discussed the specifications under development for Computers. The final draft of the new technical specifications for Imaging Equipment and the updates for the eu-energystar.org website were presented.

EC - 09.06.2006 The European Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency have successfully finalized the negotiations on a new EU-US Agreement on the ENERGY STAR for office equipment.
The new Agreement is expected to be concluded in autumn. It provides the framework for continuing EU-US cooperation on fostering the energy efficiency of computers, monitors, copiers, printers, scanners and fax machines and contains new demanding and innovative energy efficiency criteria. These cover the energy consumption both in the standby and in the use phase, and will be further developed and adapted to future technology and market evolution. New criteria for computers are currently under development and will be added soon. ENERGY STAR is part of the Community strategy to better manage energy demand, contribute to security of energy supply and mitigate climate change.

The European Commission has launched the procedure to negotiate a new Agreement on the EU-US ENERGY STAR programme for office equipment with the United States. The new agreement that the EU will start negotiating with the United States when the Council grants the mandate to the Commission will include more ambitious energy efficiency standards for office equipment. EC - 24.03.2006 EC ENERGY STAR database updated
All products in the EC ENERGY STAR database have been processed in order to distinguish current models from the discontinued models. It is now possible to view only the models that are currently being manufactured and offered on the European market.

The possible continuation of the ENERGY STAR programme in the EU was discussed. The suggestion to have a new agreement on the ENERGY STAR programme with the USA for a second period of five years was supported by the members of the ECESB.

EC - 22.12.2004 The Commission has formally adopted the new technical specifications for computer monitors, as agreed with the US EPA.

FI - 17.12.2004 EC ENERGY STAR Dealer Programme - 3 Step IT Oy joined first!
The first company to join the EC ENERGY STAR Dealer Programme in Europe is 3 Step IT Oy from Finland. Based on co-operation and discussions with Motiva - ENERGY STAR Contact in Finland - 3 Step IT Oy shows the way for other companies to follow.

The business idea of 3 Step IT is to facilitate management of the entire lifecycle of IT equipment. "Our services consist of flexible rental, on-line Asset Management and environmentally sound remarketing services", says Mr Artti Aurasmaa, Chief Operating Officer. "Energy use plays an important role in IT lifecycle, and ENERGY STAR offers us tools for managing it", he continues.

Revision of the efficiency criteria for imaging equipment and computers: Technical subgroups met in Ispra (European Commission JRC) on the 10th November. They reported to the ECESB on the 3rd December (see draft minutes) and will hold their next meeting on Monday 24 January at the European Commission Joint Research Centre - in Ispra (Italy). A morning session will be dedicated to the computer specification and in particular on the discussion on the definitions, approaches for on-mode efficiency valuation and benchmarking. The afternoon session will cover imaging equipment.

Revision of the efficiency criteria for Computer Monitors: The special committee of the Council has endorsed [see document 13631] the draft specifications (corresponding to version 4.0 - see working doc SEC_2004_1157_EN_monitor specs). Formal adoption by the Commission and Publication in the Official Journal will follow.
DK - 25.11.2004 Danish Electricity Saving Trust (DEST) used the data from the database on eu-energystar.org in connection to a voluntary agreement with IT manufacturers on the Danish market, see www.it.sparel.dk Link opens new window. As part of the agreement, manufacturers should dedicate the majority of their marketing and promotion efforts to the most energy efficient computers and monitors according to DEST's definition. In order to validate and analyse the power consumption levels for being "energy efficient" DEST used the data from the database on eu-energystar.org.
EC - 30.06.2004 Gateway has announced that it will no longer actively sell its products in Europe (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, UK). Therefore Gateway will be marked as a "traded brand" in the EC ENERGY STAR database.
FI - 26.05.2004 Finnish Sähköviesti magazine has an article on how to "Adjust PC electricity use to the right level" (Tietokoneen sähkönkulutus kohdalleen). The article tells about the ENERGY STAR website and highlights the useful tools now public available on the website (general information, energy calculator, database etc.).
Sähköviesti (Electricity Message) magazine is widely spread publication sent by electric utilities to their customers.

EC - 10.12.2003 Commission proposes new rules to ensure that all Member States save each year at least 1% more energy. This is the ambitious goal that the Commission has proposed today with its new Directive to boost energy efficiency in the Union and promote the market for energy services. Member State public sectors would make a particular contribution to reaching this overall target as they would need to save at least 1.5% energy a year, notably thanks to energy efficient public procurement.
